Ray's introduction into the world of fine jewelry began with an apprenticeship under master jewelers at Dunklings, Australia's oldest jewelry house. There, he restored family suites of jewelry that included crowns and tiaras.

Ray became enamored with the grid pattern undersides of these pieces. Their technical complexity and visual weightlessness embedded themselves in his imagination. Years later, while developing his own line of fine jewelry, he recognized how beautifully suited that grid pattern was to modern taste. That was the eureka moment, the birth of what would become Crownwork®.
